what we create within us is always mirrored outside of us.

- shakti gawain, author of "creative visualization"
(source of the above quote: @ShaktiGawainOne)

i first learned of this book while reading "the artist's way" by julia cameron. the spiritual quotes that spoke to me the most were hers. my dear friend sheereen, whom i spoke to about my discovery of shakti gawain, bought "creative visualization" for me...one of the best gifts i've ever received. in fact, this is probably as good a time as any for a refresher.

what i find interesting is how much of a sting i get from the quote above. and if you apply it to your own life, i'm sure you'll feel just as uneasy. i interpret this quote to mean "there are no victims." whatever has manifested in your life began with you and me. no person or nothing "out there." this quote challenges us to reflect on our choices, intentions, actions and take the sole responsibility for our circumstances. uh yeah exactly...OUCH!

life is thickly sown with thorns,
and i know no other remedy
but to pass quickly through them.
the longer we dwell on our misfortunes,
the greater their power to harm us.

taking the sunia(n) antar challenge

the last 7 weeks have been challenging to say the least. without going into too much detail, literally every aspect of my life has been rocked in some way (home, romance, career, family, friends, etc) causing me to "lose it" here and there leaving no prisoners. everything was quickly unraveling.

four weeks ago, i tried out kundalini yoga for the first time with kate, a writer (www.mylifeinyellow.com) and fellow teacher from om factory's teacher training program. i've been wanting to take a kundalini class because i enjoy learning & working with the chakras, and i do believe you can tap into these energy centers for healing and growth. and...basically i felt like what's on the bottom of your shoe and wanted to shake the feeling, so i was down to try anything. we were introduced to 4 very interesting and, without an open mind one may say, peculiar set of "exercises," one of which was "sunia(n) antar." our teacher fallon imparted this is a meditation for emotional balance. it feels a little weird at first because you're basically holding yourself up by the armpit. try not to laugh (*snickering myself*). but...fallon assured a turnaround in one's aura if practiced for 3 mins a day for 40 days. i was intrigued, and it's been marinating in my mind ever since.
sunia(n) antar - meditation for emotional balance
the instruction went something like this...
* sit in a comfortable seated position.
* hold your arms straight out in front of you with your thumbs facing the sky, bend your elbows and cross your arms, placing your hands right under your armpits.
* scrunch your shoulders high, high, high. release the tension in your neck with your shoulders still scrunched.
* now "just breath" (this is not as simple as it reads, so my suggestion would be to put your attention on your nostrils and feel the air flowing into your nose as you inhale and feel the air flowing out as you exhale...really be there and notice what you feel. you may feel that the breath is cooler on the inhale and warmer on the exhale, or vice versa.)
* close your eyes, breathing in this position for 3 mins.

so...if you're going through your own spiritual avalanche, will u join me in the "sunia(n) antar" 40-day challenge? if we start today, the challenge ends on sept 27. if you read this sometime in between the next 40 days, no worries...join in and let me know how it's going in the comments section.

"sat nam"
as they say,
which i read means
"truth is our identity."

cherish your vision;
cherish your ideals;
cherish the music that stirs in your heart,
the beauty that forms in your mind,
the loveliness that drapes your purest thoughts.
if you remain true to them, your world will at last be built.

i love this. keep the image you have for yourself and your life and see it actualize in the real world.

in order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different.
- coco chanel

or is it just good enough to be oneself. in a world where we're always striving to be something "different" or "exotic" or "unique," when do we let ourselves off the hook and say "i'm good enough as is." (and yes that was a rhetorical question, hence no question mark). in fact, we are all already different. well maybe on the surface that is. deep down, we're all the same...connected as one. so that solves it, just be yourself.

showing up

a famous woody allen quote is "90% of success is just showing up." i first heard this quote in one of my acting classes at william esper. we were discussing the auditioning grind. this quote can be applied to  various aspects of our lives, mainly our relationships.

Women really want a man who is consistent, who shows up for her and who doesn't waiver. It's a man's grounded, single-pointed focus on following his purpose, plus showing up for his woman that proves to her that she can open up to him. A woman just can't open herself and give herself fully to a man she doesn't trust.

Call her bluff. See her hesitancy not as rejection but as a test to see if you are going to leave or stay. She will open up and give herself to the steadfast man whom she trusts. Be that man. Sometimes you have to fight for love. And sometimes you just have to show up, be present and let it emerge.
